Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that can be present in dangerous levels in the home. Radon is released from rock or soil, seeps into homes through foundation cracks, and can reach harmful levels if trapped indoors. The EPA has been active on indoor radon issues for more than 20 years, and recommends that all homes in the U.S. be tested for radon and high levels be reduced.
The EPA believes that any radon exposure carries some risk - no level of radon is safe. Even radon levels below 4 pCi/L pose some risk, and you can reduce your risk of lung cancer by lowering your radon level.
TESTING FOR RADON IS INEXPENSIVE AND COULD SAVE A LIFE
Unfortunately most homes are tested for radon gas only when they are involved in real estate transactions. Even worse, some real estate professionals suggest that testing for radon gas is not necessary in some areas. Our understanding of how radon gas is produced and how it effects our health has evolved in recent years leading to the EPA’s recommendation that:
ALL HOMES SHOULD BE TESTED FOR RADON
Did You Know that the level of Radon gas in your
Home can vary monthly, weekly, daily
even hourly?
Did You Know that the EPA considers any Radon
testing of less than a 6 month period to be a
short term test?
